Gear Review: 5ive Star Gear Urban Tactical Day Pack

Bug out bags are an essential part of being ready for anything.

You should have a go-bag in your car, home, and office – and if possible – different packs for different issues.

IE Weather vs civil unrest vs survival. Now we can talk about contents all day, but you need a bag to put it all in. However, 5ive Star Gear makes a great prefabbed survival kit.

Luckily, they also make packs. This one – the 5ive Star Gear Urban Go Pack – is designed for urban bug outs, just like it’s name implies, and is markedly smaller than the 3 Day Assault Pack they make at 19″x12″x10″. This pack is made from heavyweight ballistic weave, and has several compartments for organizing your day to day items like keys and pens, to other smaller items in the fishnet pouches in the main compartment, as well as in the front pouch. Moreover, there is ample MOLLE webbing on the face and two side pouches on the sides to connect more gear. In the main compartment there is also a hydration area and plastic insert for stability, and holes to route out the drinking tube. The whole pack itself is expandable and has cinch straps, as well as drainage grommets on the inside in addition to webbing on the bottom to secure a tent or sleep roll.

The padding on this pack is noteworthy – with cushy shoulder padding on the detached straps (they’re secured to the main pack with 1″ webbing, which at first glance looks odd, but is extremely comfortable) – as well as padding on the back and waist straps, which are fully adjustable and removable. I really like the way the pack balances on the back, and you can move quickly with it on once the chest and waist straps are set up and cinched in. All the handles around the pack are reinforced and truly ready to be used as drag handles.

Overall, it’s a fine pack for the price point. I wouldn’t use it for much more than a day hike, as the size makes it’s loadout limited, but for a bug out bag, it’s ideal. You have ample webbing to secure more gear, as well as internal organization options with this hydration friendly pack.

Pros, what we like: Compact with a large internal capacity and cinch straps to make it smaller when you don’t load it out, it also has great padding and ample webbing to attach gear to. With drainage grommets, it’s good for a day hike where you might get wet. It’s holding up great with moderate use, but will most likely remain a bug out or occasional day hike pack.

Cons, what we don’t like: It’s a bit on the small side, but will serve it’s role as a bugout bag or day pack just fine.\
