Gear Review: CLP Frog Lube

You’d think we’d love something called Froglube – ya know, Frogmen, Froglube. Makes sense? Well you’re right. We do love this product.

Aside from being a Veteran owned business, this stuff does the job. It’s a bio-based lubricant, so you can check off a box if you’re trying to be “green,” and is made from USDA Certified Food Grade products. What exactly? I don’t know, but it’s made right here in the USA from a proprietary formula. Frog Lube does a great job somehow of dissolving carbon buildup and fouling on contact, and has “heavy specific gravity.” No, that’s not something from a Neil Degrasse Tyson lecture, it just means that it can “season” the metal via absorption deep into pores.

I know what you’re thinking now –  Is FrogLube CLP safe for non-metal surfaces? You bet! You can use it on polymer (there you go Glock and M&P people), urethane, wood, nylon, and will add many years to the service life of your weapon; without the use of petroleum or water, it’s non-toxic. I wouldn’t go eating it, but it won’t stick up a room like Hoppe’s solvent will, and it won’t harm the environment.

My first hand account – it works. There’s not much more I can say. I have it on some older revolvers in a thin film to preserve it as directed, fight rust, and prevent the pernicious pitting we all know about. I also like to use it on my 1911s. While I usually run Glocks, there is something deeply iconic about a 1911, but they need maintenance to reliably function. I remember a SWAT guy telling a joke on the range one day: “How do you know when you’ve oiled a 1911 enough? The oil is dripping off your elbow.” It was tongue-in-cheek, but accurate.

This stuff has the ability to solidify when cooled to an almost waxy texture, then once heated up – IE when you’re sending lead downrange, it liquefies and lubricates key parts – like slides, bolts, etc. Frog Lube also takes away the need to use the odorous solvents, which yea, they work, but they also get into your pores and you smell like a gas station if you clean your weapons without gloves. Then you have to apply gun oil – which comes in many varieties.

Froglube is your one-stop for cleaning, lubricating, and protecting (this is where the CLP comes from). It works, it’s environmentally safe, has a pleasing aroma, and is made by a veteran owned business. We here at SGPT recommend it.
