Gear Review: SOG Mini Pentagon

EDC knives come in all shapes and sizes. While it’s great to carry any blade, some people may opt for a fixed blade option. For this, you want something concealable, in our opinion, but something that is also effective. The SOG Pentagon fits the bill in both respects.

The SOG Mini Pentagon Fixed Blade M14K-CP is a quick handling little knife. At roughly 3.5 inches, the AUS-8 steel blade has serrations on one side, and a straight edge on the other. It has a good balance, but is very, very light. Outstanding for quick deployment and CQB applications, this knife also has great utility with a viciously sharp blade and serrated edge. It’s powder-coated and anti-reflective.

The handle is a nice, tacky, rubbery like Kraton material, with a lanyard hold in the pommel. The full tang AUS blade runs through the handle, giving it strength and stability.

It also gives you some extra purchase should your hands be wet, sweaty, or worse – bloody.

The Kydex sheath it comes with is serviceable. It’s not the best, the belt clip is a simple piece of plastic, but it gets the job done. It definitely can be carried IWB, and is quite comfortable to wear. The SOG Mini Pentagon Fixed Blade locks positively in the sheath, and even comes with a ball chain to use as a lanyard to wear this knife around the neck, or alternately, this could be laced to a pack with some paracord by weaving through the grommets.

Best applications? EDC or as a back up knife. Overall, out of the box it is solid, and the only shortcoming is the Kydex sheath that comes with it.

Pros, what we like: Quick handling, sharp, double-edged and easily deployed fixed blade EDC. The powder coated blade is a plus, as is the grippy Kraton Handle.

Cons, what we don’t like: The sheath feels a little flimsy on the clip. However it does lock up tight and stays put when drawing.
