Next Generation Stryker ICV Will Launch Hellfire Missiles

Looking more like the APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) in Aliens–or something out of a video game taking place sometime in the near future–General Dynamics Land Division has unveiled its new variation on the Stryker, which is an eight-wheeled, armored vehicle designed for  fighting.

Originally derived from the Canadian LAV III and the Swiss Piranha III, the Stryker is produced by General Dynamics for the US Army. The vehicle has 4-wheel drive (8×4) and can be shifted to all-wheel drive (8×8).

Currently, the main armament of the Stryker is a Protector M151 Remote Weapon station with one of three possible weapons–a .50 caliber M2 machine gun, a 7.62mm M240 machine gun, or an automatic grenade launcher. The US Army has been working with GDLS on a way to additionally mount a 30mm cannon.

The new variation of the Stryker, shown above, will fire Hellfire missiles, which are anti-armor and usually Air-to-Surface–meaning fired from a plane or helicopter. Among the helicopters equipped to fire Hellfire missiles are the UH-60 Blackhawk, the WAH-64 Apache, and the AH-1 SeaCobra. There are also US Military drones equipped to launch Hellfires.

The new Stryker, currently in prototype format, will be operated by a 3-man crew. No date has been set for its use in the US Army, but the vehicle has been put on the “fast track” for production to avoid delays.
