The Origin Of The Spartan Race – Supplemental Reading

Most of us are familiar with the Spartan Race from the much-publicized military training drills featured in popular blockbuster movies and action films. Similarly, the Spartan track events primarily comprise of obstacle racing (OCR), in which the participants have to overcome various hurdles and physical challenges in the course of the marathon. The challenges in this event are strategically placed such that there is a progressive increment in the difficulty level of the obstacles, as the competitor inches towards the finish line. Although it has been predominantly an individual role event, there is a team-based variant of the same- the Hurricane heat- where competitors can group up and complete tasks with varying degrees of difficulty while still striving to beat other teams

The Spartan run was born from the Death race: a mentally and physically challenging sporting event franchised to peak.com. This original prototype of the Spartan was created by Joe Desena, Julian Kopald, and Andy Weinberg. All three are professional ultra-athletes who came together in 2005 and designed a way for athletes to test their resilience by subjecting themselves to a 3-day grueling challenge. The first edition of Death clash took place in 2006 over the adverse terrain of the Green Mountains in Pittsburg and Vermont, USA.

Although the idea of this cross-country event was borrowed from the Death racing contests, the present-day event is less intensive, shorter and more organized. The original model from which the event was crafted from, doesn’t have a particular starting or ending point. On that note, the primary objective of the contestants is to last through the multi-faceted 70-hour super challenging competition without giving up. At the same time, the event organizers of the Death Series do not provide any kind of technical or physical support to the racers. That said, the first official event, which was held in 2010 attracted more than 500 contestants, and the winner went home $2000 richer.
