SGPT: Tell us about yourself?
Lauri Luvvorn: I am a CrossFit coach at CrossFit Throne in Lubbock, TX. I am also a chiropractors assistant at AMC Chiropractic.
SGPT: Did you have an athletic background growing up?
LL: I have been a CrossFit athlete for 6 years. I also currently do archery, Goruck, and SEALFIT. I have done ice hockey, gymnastics, track, martial arts, volleyball, and dance.
SGPT: How did you train for the Bataan Death March?
LL: CrossFit, rucking, and GORUCK.
SGPT: Tell us a little about the event? Where was it?
LL: The Bataan Death March memorial march is conducted in honor of the heroic service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II, sacrificing their freedom, health, and, in many cases, their very lives. It is held annually at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. I did the full marathon, but they also offer a 14.2 mile race. This year is the 75th anniversary of the event that took place on April 9, 1942. The survivors that are still living were in attendance with one walking the first 8.5 miles.
SGPT: What was hardest part of the event?
LL: The sun. There was no shade and the temperature reached 87 degrees, which set a record high. Also, the sand pit was the hardest part of the trail. The sand pit is filled with sand or loose gravel. I wanted to quit when going through the sand pit, but I knew I needed to finish the drill.

SGPT: What is one thing you wish you would have done to get ready for the Bataan Death March?
LL: I wish I had prepared better with electrolytes. I had a 3 liter Camelbak with me, but didn’t get enough salt/electrolytes. When I got to the aid station at mile 22 I noticed I wasn’t sweating anymore. I drank some Gatoraid and started sweating again.
SGPT: Any tips for up and coming athletes that want to do the Bataan Death March?
LL: I ate two 600 calorie Ample Meals during the race that SEALFIT coach Mark Divine recommends. This was my first full marathon, but I have complete a 50k ultramarathon and that helped me get through Bataan. Know your “Why” and have one or more motivational mantras.
SGPT: What kind of boots/shoes did you use for the event?
LL: I wore Salomon X trail running shoes.
SGPT: Did you use double socks or body glide on your feet to prevent blisters?
LL: I used Bodyglide Original Anti-Chafe Balm along with toe socks and Smart Wool socks. I also wore Gaiters which kept the sand and rocks out of my shoes. https://dirtygirlgaiters.com/
SGPT: What kind of ruck did you use for training and the event?
LL: I used the Rothco large transport pack, but I also recommend the backpacks from the GORUCK company.
SGPT: What is your next big event?
LL: I am doing the SEALFIT 20X Challenge on April 29.
SGPT: What book are you reading now?
LL: Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend.
