Question: Coach Brad; I am trying to work through the BUDS “warning order” and having trouble with pool availability. I don’t have one near me.
I can’t get my mind around jumping in the local pond/lake.
Call me a pansy but the fear of the unseen. How did you overcome this in the SEALs? – Roger X
Answer: Roger; Good question. Personally I grew up swimming in lakes, rivers and ponds so it was not a big deal.
So for you – I would do this two ways. I would sign up for a local Spartan Race or mud run where you have to jump into water and wade across.
The second method is this….
go stand at the edge of the pond
get your feet in the pond
go run around the edge of the pond
get in up to your knees
run around pond
next time jump in the pond up to chest deep
See my track?
If you are afraid of heights I would use a similar method. I would climb up a ladder leaned against a building (lets say a garage that is 10 feet high). I would climb up a few rungs till I felt tense then
I would carefully climb back down. I would close my eyes and climb again. I would keep going up that ladder higher and higher – even if it is just one rung at a time – until I get to the top rung and step up onto the top of the building.
Another method if you have access to it would be to go to a local climbing gym.
Traverse around the gym only a few feet above the ground.
Then tie into a rope (with a belayer) and climb up a few feet.
Keep going higher until you are tense and then get lowered back down by your belayer? See how that works?
If you don’t have a climbing wall then find a local playground and climb on the equipment there.
Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway
ANSWER: I use Athletic Greens in our shakes. It’s got tons of great nutrition—vitamins and minerals. Plus it mixes up easy in milk or water.
