US Military to Get Artillery Shells Able to Travel 7 Times Speed of Sound

Because of the recent posturing from North Korea (which has chosen to stand down and retract its threat of firing on Guam), the US Military has chosen to create the next generation of artillery shells–which will be travel at 7 times the speed of sound.

This hypersonic speed is the at which the North American X-15 (introduced in 1959) can fly.

These HPVs (hyper-velocity projectiles) have been used in tests beginning in 2016. They are guided with extreme precision and, because they travel at such an enormous speed, they can strike targets up to 100 miles away within 72 seconds. Currently, artillery shells can reach a target 20 miles away. The impact has been compared to being struck by a freight train traveling at full speed.

They are loaded via a sliding metal carriage suspended between two rails within a magnetic field, which is so powerful it allows the shells to launch without the need for explosive charges, and can be fired at 20 rounds per minute. The HPVs can hit both stationary and moving targets.

The US Navy’s 5″/54 caliber Mark 45 gun and the US Army’s Paladin 155mm Howitzer are slated to be first in receiving upgraded systems to fire these new shells.

Watch the video below to see exactly how powerful these shells are, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

QUESTION: Hello. I’m a pretty fat guy. I’m 5 foot 6 and I weigh 290. I’m trying to get into the military and I’m trying to chop weight as quickly as possible. Is 6-Month training program work out more focused to people that are somewhat fit or is this for fatter people as well?

ANSWER: It is for all levels as workouts are scaleable. You can always try the workouts as they are to see what your limits are then go from there. But be sure to watch out for overtraining. Check out this article, Overtraining–How Much is too Much?
