On Saturday June 9th, 2011 the Atlanta Affiliate CrossFit League tournament got underway in Chamblee (north Atlanta), Georgia. The event was hosted by CrossFit HD, which is a brand spanking new gym decked out with Rogue Fitness gear and a killer custom paint job.
The event started off with a packed gym and athletes scrambling in all directions for the first heat. The workout was a rotation of four stations for 2.5 minutes per station with the exercises being overhead squat, pullups, atomic situps and thrusters.
The second workout had each athlete at a different station and attempting to complete a WOD inside of 10 minutes but going against their opponents who went next. The WOD’s were Angie, Fran, Grace and a 2,000 meter row.
The third event was a burner with each athlete working at a station for 1 minute and then moving on to the other station (Fight Gone Bad style) for a total of 9 minutes of work. The stations were push press, burpee, and wall balls. The whole gym was on fire with everyone screaming for their competitors to eek out another rep. That idea of every rep counting hit home with CrossFit Perimeter edging out CrossFit Paragon by 1 rep over 6 athletes and winning — talk about close!
CrossFit HD owner Andre “Dre” Urquiza & Sung Kong remarked “We were honored to host the Atlanta Affiliate League play-offs and 2POOD‘s Pro’s v Joe’s fundraiser. Both events brought out the true CrossFit spirit of community, with athletes, their friends and family supporting each other. The heart and effort demonstrated by all competitors was also inspiring, and a highlight of every CrossFit competition. We are very proud to be part of this community and look forward to helping it continue to grow.”
Mellisa Saxton from CrossFit Perimeter stated “I would like to comment about the sense of community this type of league brings to Crossfit as a sport. I’ve not only built close relationships with my teammates but also with athletes from other teams/gyms. While it’s a serious competition in every way, we support each other and push our opponents to perform their best in every workout. I admire these athletes and hope to earn their respect in return.
After a paleo lunch with catfish gumbo and avocado and tuna (all Paleo) from Christophe’s Kitchen – the next event began to form up. The event was billed as “Pro’s vs. Joe & His Bro (Bra)” and served as a fundraiser to help the 2POOD Atlanta CrossFit elite athletes get to the CrossFit Games later this month.
