If you’ve spent any time in a Crossfit gym or with a bunch of runners, you know LAX Balls are used en masse to break up knots. You’ve probably even seen them taped together to make “peanuts” to break up your thoracic muscles. I know, I used them like crazy when I was doing workouts that involved copious muscle ups or pull ups or even deadlifts.
And I thought you just had to chase the ball around when you sat one one to break up a knot in your glutes. That is until I was scrolling through Instagram one day, and saw Acumobility made these ingenious mobility balls! I had to scoop some up. Now I thought they only would do what a LAX ball did, but I was wrong.
When I got them, I noticed they were a tacky sort of material. Not enough to stick to your hand, but enough to stop it from sliding across a hardwood floor or rubber mat. Also, enough to stick to your skin when you’re doing active release therapy. That is going through a full range of motion while applying pressure to both break up knots and fascia, and activate the muscle group. For instance, if your front deltoid is tight, laying prone with the ball in the shoulder, and doing a sort of swimming motion. You can see a plethora of videos on how to break up everything from a tight back to forearms to lats HERE. Just like the Eclipse Roller, you can use these tools to smash knots everywhere.
Now, I know, LAX balls with tape or something can do that. Hold on, sailor. They can’t do nearly the things this can do. Aside from being made from a tacky rubber you don’t need to chase everywhere, these also come in two “flavors” if you will. Orange – Level 1, for mild pressure (mild is being nice, it hurts like a bitch when you find the knot), and another for deep, intense pressure (blue). What’s more, is you can use these to go full Ninja Warrior and do push ups to challenge your stability muscles. This product can be used by you firebreathers reading this, all the way to power lifting and strongman athletes who are prone to big knots to accompany their big lifts.
And to make it even more versatile, the base doubles as a “knife edge” to blade that pesky fascia in your leg and further, similar to the ancient Gua Shua method of blading the skin to make it red, and thus bring blood flow to the area. So this particular mobility tool checks A LOT of boxes.
Overall, it’s a fantastic product, so great in fact I can’t believe it didn’t exist sooner! But that’s what we can say about all stellar inventions. When you pair these up, they’re an invaluable tool for active release, breaking up pesky knots, fascia work, and much more. If you had one recovery product to take with you on the road, this is it – and it takes up little more room then the now-archaic-by comparison LAX ball.
Pros, what we like: Tacky, grippy surface, two different harnesses, versatility, and the ability to use them in pairs to break up knots and tension literally everywhere.
Cons, what we don’t like: That we didn’t find them sooner. Snag one.
