Mental toughness has become a popular buzzword.
Everyone wants it.
Few people are willing to do the work required to build it.
The truth is that mental toughness isn’t something you’re born with. It’s developed through consistent exposure to challenge, adversity, discomfort, and uncertainty.
Whether you’re preparing for BUD/S, training for a marathon, starting a business, climbing a mountain, or simply trying to become a better version of yourself, the principles remain the same.
No one illustrates these principles better than David Goggins and Jocko Willink.

What Is Mental Toughness?
Mental toughness is the ability to perform when you don’t feel like it.
It’s the ability to stay calm under pressure.
It’s the discipline to do what needs to be done regardless of your mood.
Mental toughness is not about being fearless.
It’s about acting despite fear.
It’s not about being superhuman.
It’s about consistently choosing the harder right over the easier wrong.
In the Navy SEAL Teams, mental toughness is often revealed through simple actions:
- Showing up when you’re tired.
- Finishing what you start.
- Staying positive during adversity.
- Supporting your teammates when you’re struggling yourself.
- Maintaining standards when nobody is watching.

David Goggins: Callusing the Mind
David Goggins often talks about “callusing the mind.”
The concept is simple.
Just as your hands develop calluses through physical work, your mind develops resilience through voluntary hardship.
Most people spend their lives avoiding discomfort.
Goggins intentionally seeks it out.
Long runs.
Cold weather.
Ultra-endurance races.
Early mornings.
Difficult goals.
His message is clear:
The mind grows stronger when it is challenged.
One practical lesson from Goggins is to do something difficult every day.
Not dangerous.
Not reckless.
Difficult.
Take the stairs.
Run the extra mile.
Finish the workout.
Wake up earlier.
Have the conversation you’ve been avoiding.
Small victories create confidence.
Confidence creates momentum.
Momentum creates transformation.
Jocko Willink: Discipline Equals Freedom
If Goggins represents intensity, Jocko represents consistency.
Jocko’s philosophy is built around one principle:
Discipline equals freedom.
Most people believe freedom comes from doing whatever they want.
Jocko argues the opposite.
Discipline creates freedom.
When you’re disciplined with your finances, you gain financial freedom.
When you’re disciplined with your health, you gain physical freedom.
When you’re disciplined with your training, you gain performance freedom.
The same principle applies to mental toughness.
Instead of relying on motivation, develop systems.
Wake up at the same time.
Train consistently.
Prepare your gear the night before.
Create routines that reduce decision-making.
Mental toughness becomes easier when good habits are automatic.
The Common Ground Between Goggins and Jocko
Although their styles are different, both men teach similar lessons.
- Accept Responsibility
Excuses solve nothing.
Your current situation may not be entirely your fault.
But it is your responsibility.
Taking ownership puts you back in control.
- Seek Challenges
Growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone.
Every meaningful accomplishment requires discomfort.
Lean into the challenge.
- Build Daily Discipline
Mental toughness isn’t built during one heroic moment.
It’s built through thousands of small decisions.
The alarm clock.
The workout.
The healthy meal.
The extra effort.
The choice to keep going.
- Control Your Mind
Your mind will often tell you to quit long before your body needs to.
Learn to recognize negative self-talk.
Question it.
Replace it with action.
Action is often the best cure for doubt.
- Focus on the Next Step
One of the secrets of surviving difficult situations is narrowing your focus.
Don’t think about the next six months.
Think about today.
Don’t think about mile 100.
Think about the next mile.
Break large problems into manageable pieces.
How Navy SEALs Build Mental Toughness
Contrary to popular belief, Navy SEALs don’t spend all day doing extreme workouts.
They build mental toughness through consistency.
They train when conditions are ideal.
They train when conditions are terrible.
They develop confidence through preparation.
During BUD/S, candidates learn quickly that motivation comes and goes.
Discipline remains.
The candidates who succeed are not always the strongest athletes.
Often they’re the men who refuse to quit when things get difficult.
They understand that pain is temporary.
Failure is temporary.
Discomfort is temporary.
Quitting lasts forever.
Five Ways to Build Mental Toughness Today
- Start Your Day with a Win
Make your bed.
Take a walk.
Complete a workout.
Create momentum early.
2. Do Something Hard Every Day
Choose voluntary discomfort.
Growth lives there.
Take a cold shower. Have that conversation with someone that you were avoiding. Do one thing that you do not want to do.
In Navy SEAL training I was constantly exposed to doing things that I did not want to do. I did not want to get in the cold water but I knew that I had to in order to complete the mission. My brain grew as I made that override choice to complete the task.
3. Limit Excuses
Take ownership of your actions.
Responsibility creates power.
4. Train Consistently
Consistency beats intensity.
Every time.

5. Finish What You Start
Develop a reputation with yourself.
Become someone who follows through.
Final Thoughts
Mental toughness isn’t reserved for Navy SEALs.
It’s available to anyone willing to practice it.
David Goggins teaches us to embrace discomfort.
Jocko Willink teaches us to embrace discipline.
Together they provide a roadmap for developing resilience in an increasingly comfortable world.
The goal isn’t to become David Goggins.
The goal isn’t to become Jocko Willink.
The goal is to become the strongest version of yourself.
Start small.
Stay consistent.
Keep showing up.
Over time you’ll discover something important:
Mental toughness is not built in a single day.
It’s built one difficult choice at a time.
