10 Tips to Stay Motivated

We get the question every week: “Coach, how do you stay motivated day in and day out?”

Tip #1

Wake up with a sense of gratitude. I am grateful for my life. Make conscious steps to create a ritual. As I walk to the bathroom every morning each step is a “thank” and the other step is a “you”.

Tip #2

Quiet time to reflect. Instead of starting the day with on the go and in a rush – take 5 minutes to relax and reflect. I like to drink a cup of coffee and look out the back window at the birds in my backyard. For others it may be meditation. Resist the urge to answer email or start working. Relax your mind and body first and set the tone for the day.

Tip #3

Watch motivational videos. This has been a key feature of helping me to stay motivated. Many athletes respond well to video and audio. Find that medium that can provide you with positive input and make it a part of your day

Tip #4

Daily connection with a mastermind group or your mentor. You are an average of the top 5 or 10 people you hang around and work with. if you have daily interaction with “A” players – you too will be brought closer to their abilities.

Tip #5

Engage in a hard workout with others. Yes; we all like to get out and do that long beach or trail run by yourself to clear your head. But few things are more uplifting than sweating with your brothers and then high fiving as you push yourself to a new level.

After the workout take 5 minutes to breathe deep and fully oxygenate your mind and body.

Tip #6

Eat a good healthy meal. All meals for that matter. Your mind and body rely on you to feed it great nutrition. Imagine a Ferrari sports car in the driveway waiting to be fired up. But the gas tank is full of grade D fuel and the oil is thick and full of sludge. The sports car may run – but will sputter and drag. Eat good fresh foods and your motivation levels (mental edge) will operate at top levels.

Tip #7

Help others. Find someone in need and help them. You must be coachable (being a part of a mastermind group and having a mentor) but you must also be willing to coach and help others. Keeping your knowledge inside and to yourself is a waste.

In high school, in sport, I had a coach who told me I was much better than I thought I was, and would make me do more in a positive sense. He was the first person who taught me not to be afraid of failure.”
Mike Krzyzewski

Tip #8

Connect with family and tell them you love them. Get in touch with friends and let them know how much they mean to you.

Tip #9

Read 5 minutes before bed. Make sure you read something positive and uplifting. Anne Rice’s
Interview with a Vampire” is probably not a good choice.

A great choice would be Think and Grow Rich: The Original, an Official Publication of The Napoleon Hill Foundation

Avoid TV and especially the evening news as it only promotes chaos and gloom.

Tip #10

Thankfulness. Take 5 minutes to “Thank yourself” as you drift off to sleep. This is an important mental process as your mind is a ease and calm and your show off gratefulness will ward off all negative thoughts.
