Questions from our readers.
Question: How did you work out on a Navy ship if you did not have any real gear?
Answer: Most all of my workouts were bodyweight so I would do pyramids of pushups, situps and pull ups. I did not have a squat rack so I did tons of walking lunges and air squats with a sand bag that I made. I had a small piece of foam rubber that I carried around in my backpack that I used for flutter kicks and ab workouts. I would do many sets of a variety of pushups including diamond (hands together), wide, and with a weight vest. For my lower body I would do many hundreds of air squats and also ride my bike for long distance in the hills. One of the easy things to do is to mix it up with the air squats. You can add a small weight or weight vest and also do full deep air squats and hold at the bottom.
One thing that I did on the ship was to do walking lunges in the back hangar bay area. I would then take my pad outside and do four count flutterkicks watching the sun go down. I would often add in eight count bodybuilders (burpees with a jump) and also some star jumps like Jack Lallane used to do.
