Check out the Marine veteran Sal Rizo GoRuck interview.
SR: Sal, 29 years old, I was in the Marines for 4 years, 3 combat Deployments to Iraq, now I’m an oilfield electrician.
SGPT: Did you have an athletic background growing up?
SR: No, unless you consider band athletic.
SGPT: How did you train for GoRuck?
SR:I began by doing a lot of running and then I discovered CrossFit, now that’s the main way I train as well as doing long weighted Rucks.
SGPT: Tell us a little about the event?
SR: I’ve done a GORUCK Light and a GORUCK Challenge. Both were incredible in their own way. They were demanding physically but also mentally. It focused insanely on teamwork and accomplishing the tasks together. Teamwork is key.

SGPT: What was hardest part of the event?
SR: I think the hardest part of the Challenge was the ocean water and how cold it was at sunrise. After we got used to it it was more on the mental side of things.
SGPT: What is one thing you wish you would have done to get ready for GoRuck?
SR: I think I should have worked on bear crawls and crab walks more, those are no joke.
SGPT: What boots did you wear? Double socks? Bodyglide or another type of anti-chafe balm?
SR: I used new balance trail shoes but I am looking into getting some boots for upcoming events.
I wore just one pair of socks but had a dry pair in my ruck, just in case. I had body glide in my ruck as well but never needed it.
SGPT: Any tips for up and coming athletes that want to do GoRuck?
SR: I think since I’m in the running for Selection next year it would be to not get stuck in your own head. Just keep pushing forward and don’t give up.
