The “Mighty” Columbia River, Tri-Cities WA is where most of my Open Water Swimming is done.

I grew up with a strong swimming background, but I didn’t do a lot of swimming as an adult until I reached the age of my early 50s in 2016.  It was only then, when a stranger approached me to help him train for the Waikiki Rough Water Swim.  I made a new friend (my “H2O Bro”) and discovered my passion for Open Water Swimming.

In 2017 I was practicing kundalini yoga through Jai Dev Singh’s interactive website.  During the fall 2017, I incorporated swimming to “Duck Island” for meditation purposes along with Jai Dev Singh’s 40 day “Magic Mantra” challenge.  When the 40 day meditation challenge ended, I was inspired to begin cold water acclimation.  I swam “exposed” without a wetsuit in the Columbia River all the way into January 2018.  My 2017 Fall cold water acclimation process is documented in my Instagram Account “baltic_of_kaniksu.”

With a new and unexpected confidence in tolerating cold water and dealing with my own mind, I pursued ultramarathon swimming under the Marathon Swimming Federation’s rules and regulations.  In July 21, 2019, I became the first person to swim unassisted and nonstop – Upper and Lower Priest Lake, ID, a 23.6 mile swim.

(Conditions were great! Only 1/2 hour of boat traffic swells in 14 hours of swimming!)

(Barely past the halfway point. This was the worst part of my epic swim.)

(I wish everyone could experience Columbia River sunrises in October the way I do!)
