#1. Decide your mission.
Plinking on the range or home defense – or both? It is a ton of fun to go out to the range and shoot. If you just want to plink at targets and are not into competition shooting then a lower end model will be fine. If you thinking home defense only then a shotgun may be a better value dollar for dollar.
#2. Budget.
Decide your budget. Are you going to buy used or new? Under $700 or above? You can buy a base model and slowly trick it out over time if you have the patience and know how. If not you can pick out parts and have a local gunsmith set you up.

#3. Defense
Are you going to use this weapon as home or ranch defense? Or just keep it in the closet in case WW3 breaks out? These are good questions to ask. If you live on a big ranch and have long shots then you will want to get a good scope. If your just thinking home defense you may want to go with a $350 shotgun.
