When it comes to high-quality hiking boots, the Alico Summit and Danner Crag Rat boots are two exceptional choices that offer excellent performance and durability. Let’s delve into their details and compare their features.

Starting with the Alico Summit, these boots are handcrafted in Italy, known for their exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. They feature a full-grain leather upper, which not only offers excellent durability but also molds to the foot over time for a personalized fit. The leather construction makes them highly resistant to abrasions and provides superior protection against rugged terrains. The Alico Summit boots also come with a Vibram outsole, renowned for its outstanding traction and durability. The padded collar and cushioned insole ensure comfort during long hikes, reducing fatigue and foot strain.

On the other hand, the Danner Crag Rat boots are designed for demanding outdoor adventures and excel in both comfort and performance. These boots feature a combination of rugged suede and textile upper, offering a balance between durability and breathability. The waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX lining ensures that your feet stay dry and comfortable in wet conditions. The Crag Rat boots also utilize a Vibram outsole, providing excellent traction and grip on various terrains. They feature a cushioned footbed and a supportive midsole for all-day comfort and reduced foot fatigue.

Both the Alico Summit and Danner Crag Rat boots offer excellent durability and ankle support. The full-grain leather upper of the Summit boots ensures exceptional protection and longevity, while the combination of suede and textile in the Crag Rat boots balances durability and breathability. Both boots are designed to provide ample ankle support, minimizing the risk of injuries on rugged terrains.

When it comes to comparisons, the Alico Summit boots prioritize traditional craftsmanship and a full-leather construction, providing a classic and durable hiking boot option. On the other hand, the Danner Crag Rat boots focus on a combination of materials for enhanced breathability and waterproof protection, making them suitable for wet and varied conditions.

Choosing between the Alico Summit and Danner Crag Rat boots ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. If you value traditional craftsmanship, a full-leather construction, and a classic hiking boot design, the Alico Summit boots are an excellent choice. However, if you prioritize a combination of materials, including suede and textile, along with enhanced breathability and waterproof features, the Danner Crag Rat boots would be a suitable option for your outdoor adventures.

Alico Summit Hiking Boots Review

I have been a fan of the Alico boots since my days in the military. Right now I own two pairs – both the Tahoe and the Summit.  They both have lugged soles, but the Summit is thicker. The Summit is leather lined and feels fabulous. I have very wide feet, and these boots are true to size, but the toe box is a little small, so it may be a good idea to go up a half a size, or plan on doing some special show stretching. (I wrapped my big toe in a couple layers of moleskin, soaked both the sock and the leather in that area of the boot with rubbing alcohol, then wore them until it dried out). The toe box on the Alico feels a little small for me, but it much roomier than the Danner Fort Lewis boots I have in the same size (9.5 EE).

These boots do get a little hot and do not breathe particularly well. Still, I am now wearing these boots to work (I have a desk job) and love the rigidity of the sole. When walking, each step has four noticable bumps as the foot rocks forward on the sole. My cats are still terrified of the boots, and I have to be careful with them since the rigid soles prevent me from feeling any creature that might get underfoot. These boots are fantastic quality and I am very happy with them. The “stitch down” or “Norwegian welt” design is really nice. I may get another pair to keep for 20 years from now when these finally wear out.

Danner Crag Rat GTX Hiking Boot Review
The Danner Crag Rat boot features a new Dynamic Response System which was developed for the most rugged high altitude conditions.

It provides the protection, the response, the rigidity and the support needed when battling ridgeline conditions of rock, jagged debris, packed snow and ice. In short, it’s made for serious hiking.

The most comfortable hiking boots I’ve ever and I’ve owned many. I used the Crag Rats in Alaska and they worked perfect during my time in the US Army.

You can pick up a pair of these for a little less than $300. These are very rugged boots and will last for years in the field.
