Special Forces Combat Diving: 7 Weeks of Intense Underwater Ops Training

Check out this awesome video about US SOF (Special Operations Forces) Combat Diving School—training that the SOF of all branches must pass.

This is in addition to the initial training the soldiers experience, whether it’s BUD/S, Ranger School, Force Recon or the US Air Force’s Pararescue Team.

As the US Army describes it:

“The grueling seven-week Combat Diver Qualification Course, or CDQC, at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School in Key West, Fla., is neither for the weak of heart, or the idle of mind. It is as intense mentally as it is physically, with an attrition rate that truly begins before each class cycle does.”

While there are a few exceptions where a soldier can attend CDQC (Combat Dive Qualification Course), it’s generally the second phase of SOF training. SEALs do learn how to operate underwater while at BUD/S (which does stand for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL), the more intense training of CDQC is part of the second phase of BUD/S.

QUESTION: Coach, can you give me any SEAL swimming tips?

ANSWER: Yes, check out this article: Special Forces Swim Workouts and Tips.

QUESTION: Since you were in the SEALs, can you tell me how I can join and what I need to do?

ANSWER: I’m not a recruiter, so you’d want to find one near you to answer your questions. You can find out info about joining the SEALs on the US Navy site.
