The FACTS:
The Salomon runs around $125 with a weight of 1 lb 2 ounces. Has Vibram sticky rubber and completely waterproof.

PROS:
What we like. The Salomon X Ultra Mid 2 GTX shoe wicks away moisture quick and easy to break in.

CONS:
What we don’t like.

The tongue gussets don’t go up high enough like previous models. Some athletes have said the boots can leak but we did not find that after numerous stream crossings and rainy days.

THE FACTS:
The Lowa Renegade runs around $190 and is made in Germany.

The insoles are removable and waterproof, all leather uppers, Vibram soles and GoreTex.

PROS:
What we like. These boots break in easy and don’t rub on your feet and create blisters (as long as you wear double socks and use body glide). They fit your feet well and don’t slip as you hike downhill. The Vibram sole gives great sticky traction and are stable in rough terrain.

CONS:
What we don’t like.

Some athletes have experienced the Vibram sole wearing through in 200 miles of hiking.
