When I was in BUDS Navy SEAL training I was scared and afraid on many occasions. Mostly it was from the swimming drills as I don’t like the feel of drowning and having water in my lungs.
Honestly, take my word for it. Getting water in your lungs and having to keep performing and underwater task – sucks!
On one particular windy cool day – I remember lining up on the pools edge for the 50 meter underwater swim (yeah; it is a 150 foot swim under water with only the breath you take when you jump in).
I had never performed this drill but I knew that I could swim pretty far underwater – but never for 50 meters.
I am not going to lie – I was pretty scared as the Instructors stationed a medic on all sides of the pool.
An instructor menacing swam and circled like a shark in the middle of the pool.
I took a few deep breathes to calm my nerves and was one of the first ones in line to give it a go.
I jumped in backwards and began my swim going as deep as possible to get to the other side.
When I hit the other side I made as big of a push as I could possibly do and then glided deep hugging the bottom of the pool.
I began to see spots in front of my eyes and as I got halfway back I began to slow down.
As I looked at the other side I thought I was going to pass out but made the last few strokes to the other side as I gasped for air.
I completed the drill – holy crap – I made it just from sheer will and not being afraid of the unknown.
What I then saw was an amazing display of the human mind.
The further back in the line the group went – we began to see guys failing and coming up for breath early.
They would get one more chance but none of them could make it and were dropped from BUDS.
You see – we were all scared and had some fear deep down in side of us.
But those that stepped forward and harnessed their fear were the ones that made it.

Question: Coach Brad; where can I find out more info on joining the Navy and becoming a SEAL?
Answer: Check out the main website here for starters. Then I would try to find a SEAL motivator/recruiter in your area. Type that into google and your city name and that will point you in the right direction.
