While it’s not designed for long-term use or regular camping, it’s an essential item for your emergency kit, offering an extra layer of security and comfort in unexpected survival situations, ensuring you stay warm and protected when it matters most.
I have personally used this set up for many overnight bikepacking trips. It does get a little clammy when it is humid out so it does have some drawbacks. The photo above shows it being used on a bed of palm fronds. This provided a little bit of insulation for the cold ground. It got down to about 31 degrees as there was frost on the ground when we woke up.
The SOL is not for really big people – I am 5 ft 8 and 170 lbs and I have room. But if you are 6 ft 2 and 250 lbs dont expect it to fit. I like this piece of kit as it is a relatively cheap set up so if your not looking to spend big dollars this is a good way to go.

Questions from our readers online.
QUESTION: How do you repair and make your bivy tent last longer?
ANSWER: I carry duck tape in the field to help repair any small holes or tears. When I get home I wash my survival tent in a five gallon bucket with a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Rinse it out thoroughly with clean water. I then hang it out to dry for a day and store it back in the bag.
